Summary

The story takes place at Tiree, a little island off the west coast of
Scotland. Doris has been invited to come along on a vacation to the island,
by her son John and her daughter-in-law, Annette. She realizes that it does
not matter to them whether she accepts the offer or not; but in spite of the
fact that they are not particularly interested in her, she decides to go
anyway. The three of them sail across the sea on board a ferry and arrive at
the island and take lodgings with their hotel.

Doris goes out on her own to explore the island even though the young couple
do not approve of it. Contrary to the couple Doris thinks that holidays are
for adventure and freedom and definitely not for relaxing. She is fascinated
by the nature and the ocean. The same day she meets an elderly man (probably
a fisherman) on the western shore where no one hardly ever come and she sees
an otter. She continues to look into the beautiful sceneries somewhere
around the hotel several more days regardless of the weather.

One Morning John and Annette take Doris for a car-ride round the island.
Doris knows that she will be able to see much more nature than she could
have done exploring it on foot, but she feels like a prisoner, planted on
the back seat of a car.

Two days before the end of the vacation John settles his mother in the hotel
in front of the television and says indirectly to her that she should not go
out for the time being; but the couple has a change of heart in night and
allows Doris to do whatever she wants. Therefore she advances to the same
area where she in the first place saw the otter and then proceeds to the
reef. When she is sitting on the reef an old tale comes to her mind.
According to the tale you can bring seals out of the sea if you sing to
them. She begins to sing and the otters start rising to the surface indeed.

When they are on the ferry again and about to return home Doris points out
that she is going to sell her old house on the mainland and head out to live
on Tiree.

Translation

The world-famous author of spy novels John Le Carré admitted recently what
many of his readers have had suspicion about for a longer period of time:
The highly respected writer has once been a spy himself. "But what I did I
do not want to talk about. You just cannot do that," said Le Carré. However
he has no trouble admitting the fact that he left the intelligent service in
the age of 33. At that time he had already published several spy novels.
Furthermore it appeared in the interview that in spite of the fact that true
spies generally speaking are critical towards spy novels they seem to be
able to accept his description of their secret world.
